World Tricycle Time-trial and Road Race Championships in Asse: Sunday, June 15, 2008
The 2008 world tricycle championships for men and women will take place in Asse, Belgium on Sunday, June 15. The day’s racing will be organised by the GWSCA (the cycle sports committee of Asse), the Sportdienst (sports service) of Asse led by Jan De Backer, 3wielweb and the Tricycle Association, with the collaboration of the Toeristenvrienden Bollebeek cycle club (TVB).
There will be two separate championship events: a time-trial in the morning and a road race in the afternoon. The 10.7 km time-trial will be over the same course as in 2006, starting and finishing in the town centre. The road race will be on a new 2.9km circuit passing through the town centre. Competitors are welcome to enter either or both events. There will also by a bicycle race for the Championship of Asse during the day. All racing will be on closed roads. Third party insurance will be arranged for all competitors.
Tricyclists with disabilities are welcome to take part in the championship time-trial and road-race: the ability and age range in the events will be wide. The day’s racing is about participation as well as competition. A great deal of media interest has been shown for what promises to be another great event in Belgian cycling history.
Throughout the day a Social Fair will be held in the Town Square, organised by André Van Droogenboeck and Anita Knops, with displays from many Flemish social service groups with an interest in promoting mobility for the disabled.
After the day’s racing, there will a Reception by the Asse town authorities followed by a Dinner for competitors and guests.
There will be a programme of social events throughout the weekend, including an exhibition of tricycle history in the Old Guesthouse; a welcome to visitors on Friday evening in the Town Square, with jazz musicians; a presentation of competitors on the podium in the Market Place on Saturday evening, 14 June; and a club run on Monday 16 June on quiet roads and cycle paths through lovely countryside and woodlands.
Arrangements have been made for the use of the Park Villa for accommodation in the town centre as in 2006 and there will also be a designated site for camping, caravans and camper vans at Hof ter Vrijlegem, a farm-hotel about five kilometres from the town centre. Details of other accommodation will be made available as soon as possible.
