Fliss Beard 100 2011

The Tricycle Association National Championship ‘100’, promoted by the North Eastern Region, preceded the CTT National ‘100’ promoted by Team Swift on Saturday, 9th July using the V278 course ~ the Dishforth/Osmotherley section of the A168/A19. There were eight entries from around the country (the furthest travelled from Kent and Norfolk) and eventually five finishers. The weather forecast was correct in that there was a noticeable cross wind, with sunshine and showers. However, the rain at the Osmotherley turn was unbelievably intense at times, with hail and thunder thrown into the mix. Carl Saint (Yorkshire R.C.), repeating his successes of 2010, won the ‘Fliss’ Beard Memorial 100 miles Championship Trophy, and the Tricycle Trophy too that was for a ‘100’ event this year, with a time of 4.35.17. A nearside wheel puncture at about 20 miles meant that he had to retrace to the turn to have a spare wheel fitted. It is estimated that he lost over 12 minutes, and some impetus.
Kent visitor Andrew Nye (Ashford Whs.) won the Handicap medal by a couple of minutes from President Jim Hopper (who was also second on scratch), Carl, Jim Ithell and Steve Brown. Adrian Perkin was well inside evens at 50 miles, but had to retire later. Caroline Nye also retired some way after the 51 mile turn. When asked about feeds and drinks before the start Caroline said that she drank like a fish: she didn’t know then that she was going to have to swim!
