Mildenhall Rally 2010

Another excellent weekend at Mildenhall.
Most of the tricycling contingent were gathered in a corral centred around Captain Dave's camper-van and the 'hostility tent'. This formed the centre of three-wheeled activity during the weekend. Saturday morning saw a run out to Prickwillow for coffee, which those of us partaking in the afternoon's grass track racing. Abstaining from the shot of caffeine, Geoff, Ian, Dave and Martin left the others, some of whom strolled on to Ely, for a tail-wind thrash back to the Rally Ground.
We arrived, signed on and readied ourselves for the first event, a 1 lap time trial. With abilities estimated we were ready for the first of the handicap (even numbers only) events. After a few more bicycle events the odd numbers competed. With a decent recovery period passing the final took place. Martin overtook Adrian and was trying to get past Ferg when the finish arrived. As I looked up from Ferg's axle, I saw Ian coming through on the follow-through from his lunge which snatched 2nd place.
Due to a couple of crashes and inclement periods the programme needed some amendment and we lost the 'block handicap' meaning the final trike event was the Devil.
From within it was quite exciting, I hope theat it was from the perimeter, with all those wheels in close proximity.
All these events were accumulated to give results on an Omnium basis, I guess with the new UCI rules we'll have to learn these terms, which gave 1st place to Geoff Booker, 2nd to Ian Matthews, 3rd to Steve Avery and 4th to Martin Badham. Other positions will be displayed when they are sorted.

For pictures see MildenhallRally2010, Full Results when sorted at Criterium.

Social aspects to follow!

Thames Valley 50 and ECCA 12 hour

22nd August:
Sandwiched between two wet nights, those of us camping noticed, the TA (Thames Valley) 50 was held in glorious conditions. The sun shone and the head wind on the Watchfield bound leg was amply compensated for by the return to Kingston Bagpuize. Carl Saint and Howard Waller progressed steadily through the field of bikes and trikes with Carl winning in 1:58:58 to Howard's 2:05:22. Geoff Booker celebrated being given the all-clear from his doctor to finish with 2:27:40 leaving Martin Badham (2:46:19) and Ferg Muir (2:56:20) to complete the field.

Meanwhile in Essex, the Nye's were riding the
Eastern Counties CA 12 hour, Andrew finishing with 181.03 miles and Caroline completing her BAR distance quota with 150.66 miles.

Another Gold Medal for David

David Stone has added to his and the country's haul of Gold Medals in the UCI Paracycling World Championships in the Road Race for T2 class riders on the final day.

If I'm translating the reports correctly, that makes four medals with medals for Great Britain in total.

UCI World Paracycling Road Championships

The 2010 UCI World Paracycling Road Championships are being held in Baie-Comeau at present. Two members of the Tricycle Association have triumphed in their classes:
David Stone is World Champion in T2 - Mens Time Trial recording 21:06.91 mins over an 11.4km sporting course, the spectators were thrilled to see the trikes flying round the corners. More information on new.britishcycling.org.uk/gbcyclingteam/article/Gbr20100820-Para-Cycling-Road-World-Championships-0.

From across La Manche, Quentin Aubage, a regular participant in the TA International Competitions, is World Champion in the T1 - Mens Time Trial completing the 11.4 Kms in 25:30.97. Another friend from the Internationals riding in the T1 group was Mark Homan from the Netherlands, 5th in 30:28.

Congratulations to all of them.

Tandem Trikes on V718

Two tandem trikes lined up to ride the Bridlington CC 10 on the V718 Saturday last (14/08/2010). Carl Saint and Ruth Crossley narrowly missed Mixed Tandem Trike Competition Record by 4 seconds with 20:10.
Peter Hopkins(65) and George Dawson(84) set the National Age record for their combined age with 26:39.
Tandem event winners, on two wheels, were Andy Fisher and Greystone Small in 19:59.

Mildenhall Rally Grass Track

For the programme of Tricycle events on the grass track at Mildenhall Click here.

It would be lovely if more of you would consider riding them as Max Pendleton has specially included them in the programme instead of us just having time at the end of the day. However you do need to officially enter as they are BC events.

I know it's more money to fork out but compare it to the price of two or three pints, it's not a lot and much better for you!

Also it shows the spectators what good fun tricycling is.

May I remind you that the National Criterium Championships have been rescheduled to Warwick Town Races on Sunday 5th September
and the Jenny Noad is on the 11th and the Stan Spelling is on the 12th.

Looking forward to seeing you, hopefully at all these events.

Eastern Region 12 hr cancelled after 9hrs

Unfortunately the CC Breckland 12 hr time trial, including the TA Eastern Region event had to be cancelled after 9 hrs due to an accident on the course.

Entries needed

Entries close for the TA (Thames Valley) 50 mile Time Trial next Tuesday. Currently Geoff Booker has only received one entry, which is a shame considering it is a Tricycle League event as well as the Tricycle Trophy event for 2010.
So let's have some more entries, I'm hoping to make it down from Norfolk to help make it an event worthy of the name.

The other event that requires entries are the Mildenhall Rally Grass track events.
Ian has arranged for four events on Saturday afternoon:
A 1 lap time trial;
A 1 lap handicap race;
A block handicap race;
And a Devil take the hindmost.

This year our events are on a more formal basis than previously, British Cycling membership or a day licence will be required. Entry fee is £14 in advance or £20 on the day.

Criterium League points to be allocated on the Omnium results from these events.

Trike Racing on the Isle of Man

Announcing the fulfillment of National Captain, Dave Hardy's long cherished dream. The publication of his book 'Tricycle Racing on the Isle of Man 1960 - 1984'.
For those of us who were there, and anyone interested in an amazing period of cycling history this an essential work.
Dave has collated details of tricycles racing in the Mountain Time Trial over the 'TT' course, in the '10' and '25', and in the two 'Kermesses' that were held annually in Peel and Castletown.
The pages are full of photographs taken during those years, result sheets and saliant facts. A treasure trove of a lost episode.

Dave has told me that demand has exceeded expectations and, out of the 100 printed he has only 27 available for sale. When I turn up at a café on the tricycle, I often find someone reminiscing about the trikes on the IoM, so I'm not all surprised.

If you haven't ordered yours yet then contact Dave Hardy on 0116 267 5979 or write to him at:
15, Woodgate Drive, Birstall, Leicester LE4 3HT.

Price: £4.99 + £1 p&p.

Trikes in the Mersey Roads 24

Two tricyclists finished the Mersey Roads 24 hr time trial. Our president Jim Hopper finishing with 360.580 miles and Dave Stokes with 290.864.
By a curious coincidence your webmaster was talking to Dave's nephew in the East, while Dave was riding in the West. We were riding the Dunwich Dynamo and my tricycle sparked an entertaining conversation to while away the balmy night.

Congratulations to Carl Saint on his 241.18 miles trike ride in the Elmet CRC 12 hr. Carl warmed up by partnering Ruth Crossley the previous day in winning the Adept Precision RT Tandem 25 in 53:36 on the tandem trike.

Apologies to Jim for my error of a factor of ten, too long staring at a retreating patch of lamplit road I think.

TV 10 mile TT cancelled

The Thames Valley 10 mile TT was cancelled on the day due to an overturned lorry on the course.
Apologies to the six entrants for their wasted journeys.

The Fliss Beard Memorial 100 Championship

On a day full of Championships, the RTTC National Championships were won by Michael Hutchinson (3:23:04) and Julia Shaw (3:45:22 - Competition Record).
But in the main event Carl Saint powered his tricycle around the 26 mile circuit in 4:10:53 to claim the Fliss Beard Trophy. Peter Holland, despite a rear end shunt from a bicycle competitor, finished with a net handicap time head and shoulders above the rest. Caroline Nye finished in 6:28: 01 to add another distance to her tally, we look forward to seeing her qualify for a Major Lyles certificate when she completes the 12 hour in a few weeks time.

On the social side, several competitors camped before the event at a splendid site in near-by New Buckenham to celebrate Gwyneth's birthday. This is a really nice, quiet site which has been earmarked for accomodation when the Eastern 12 draws near.
Results have been posted, the RTTC National Championship providing splits as riders complete a circuit each time.

South Western 25

Attached is the result of the T.A. (SW) 25 held on Saturday 3rd July 2010.
The result proves interesting in many ways, not least the fact that our "new convert" Roger Cook, sporting a brand new Trykit Trike, broke the "Nye Family" stranglehold on awards in the South, and in his first 25 on 3 wheels as well. Such is his "total conversion" that he has already entered the Nationals. Now that he has won a medal he'll need initiating to the joys of the T.A. Dinner & Prize presentation.

All did good rides in warm but windy conditions and, with the exception of our Septuagenarians, were within a minute of each other on handicap. Handicap apart, Bob and Grant aquitted themselves well.

Thanks to all for taking part, and a special welcome to Roger Cook, and a welcome return to Bob West and Grant Sykes.

Photos are available in the South Western Gallery courtesy of Dave Carlsson.

York Rally 25

Carl Saint impressively secured both the F.B. Wood and T. Henderson Memorial Trophies by being by far the fastest rider on scratch and on handicap, beating Peter Hopkins into second place in both competitions, the scratch by a staggering 19 minutes on a far from ideal day.
Tales have trickled back from the York Rally of another wind swept and damp weekend, congratulations to Carl and to all the riders who braved the conditions. Commiserations to Keith Buck who suffered mechanical problems and did not finish.

National Criterium Championship 2010

Due to insufficient entries the proposed National Criterium Championship event at Ilton, Somerset has been cancelled.
Ian Matthews has been in touch with Peter Mooney, who is pleased to welcome us, competing for the Championship again at Warwick in September. Details on Activities.

Fast rides on Trikes in the East

There were some fast rides in time trials in the Eastern Region at the weekend.
Leigh-on-Sea tricyclist Eric Marsh, who is 80 years old, took his Higgins round the E2/25 course on the Newmarket bypass in 1:6:25.
This was a VTTA East Anglian Group 25 and Eric's beating of his age standard by a massive +30:02 ensured he was event winner by a large margin. He therefore takes the H F Nevill Cup, named in honour Herbie Nevill, a founder member of both the TA East and the VTTA East Anglian Group

In the same event Adrian Perkin finished in 1:3:28, thus breaking his own Godric CC trike club record of 1:5:50 which had stood for 45 years since he set it in 1965,at the age of 22.
The new record did not stand by any means so long - in fact only until clubmate John Dupen, off 91 minutes later in the starting order, came in - with 1:3:17.

Trike results 5/6th June

The TA (Thames Valley) 25 on Saturday was hot with organiser Geoff Booker taking first place in 1:06:47, Dave Worsfold won the handicap award with a net time of 56:24.
On the following day the South Eastern 50 was held on the Q50/ 11(Brenzett) course.
Andrew Nye wins the London East Spelling Memorial Trophy for the second year running, despite puncturing and having to ride on the rim for the last 10 miles - there were several punctures in the accompanying Kent CA solo event, after a storm in the night made the roads gritty. Ian rode well to take the handicap, and Caroline Nye did well to complete her first 50 in Kent. Richard Bailey was feeling unwell and tired, so retired at halfway.

National Championship 'Fliss Beard' 100

This event is being run in the Eastern Region alongside the RTTC National Championship 100 on 11th July. As a result the closing date for entries is 15th June 2010. In retrospect, a Non-standard closing date indicator should have been added when details went to press, but the thought didn't occur last October.

Some riders are camping in nearby New Buckenham before the event, details under Activities.

Bruce Kingsford Weekend 2010

The weekend was bracketed by rain, though most participants had got home by Tuesday's downpour leaving just those Anfield 100 riders recovering before the long drive home.
Unfortunately Saturday morning was rather soggy and your wimpish scribe stayed in his tent for the clubrun, venturing out in time for the NEC meeting. Celia's excellent catering kept spirits up until the weather brightened.

On Sunday, a stiff wind for the Bruce Kingsford 50 kept all but two rides outside 'evens', the National Championship crown going to Carl Saint, whose 2:05:57 was 17 minutes clear of John Thompson (fastest on handicap). The only tandem (Martin and Adrian's trike) rolled around in just over 3 hours. The competitors were cheered on their way by enthusiastic marshalls and, for the last four miles a welcome tail wind.

Riders, marshalls, supporters and all gathered afterwards in Astley Village Hall for post mortems, discussion, and refuelling on rols, quiche and cake. The prize winners were feted and a birthday cake presented to Cliff Tremaine to celebrate his 75th birthday.

In the afternoon, Edwin Hargraves led a large group of 22 assorted cyclist, mostly on three wheels, to Roden Garden Centre where we created a shortage in teapots.

Photos taken over the weekend

Some folk then headed home while others prepared for the morrow's battle in the Anfield 100. Early in the morning, riders and marshalls congregated at Shawbury Parish Hall before the start.

Thankfully Sunday's wind had become a zephyr, in comparison, but the hills had not changed much overnight. By Prees Heath Howard Waller was first trike on the road, while Martin Badham was making steady progress backwards through the field. Adrian Perkin passed him on the first of the four High Ercall circuits, then Ralph Dadswell and then Howard again.

Overall winner was Andy Bason with 3:44:12, the only ride inside 4 hours.

Tricycle results of Anfield

South Eastern 10 mile TT

It was a fine morning, with little wind. Richard rode strongly, and gained most of his advantage over Andrew on the return leg, which was into the wind, and with more climbs. Ian has done no riding recently, so was not surprised to be, unusually for him, outside evens. Alan travelled a long way from Essex in his Austin Ruby, to support the event, and looked as though he enjoyed his ride. Results

John Dupen makes it a double

John Dupen, Godric CC won both fastest and handicap awards with 1:9:28 (1:02:00 on handicap) to win the Eastern Region '25' on Sunday. His time was a personal best by 3:23 on a day when many were well below their best. In another double, he was followed home by team mate Adrian Perkin in 1:11:52. See our Results page for full details and the East Gallery for pictures of all the riders in action at the turn.

Tricycle Association (North Eastern Region) ‘10’s

for the 'Mike Dixie' Handicap Trophies.

Monday 3rd May 2010
On a balmy day the V718 course to the west of Hull is unbelievably fast; but the cold northerly wind carrying occasional showers and a short sharp hail storm, made for difficult conditions for the 17 solo tricyclists facing Christine Minto, the Start Timekeeper. George Mills made the best of a generous handicap to take the ‘Mike Dixie’ Memorial Handicap Trophy by over a minute from his fast improving team mate, Paul Martin; with Lincoln Wheeler, Dom Cunningham in third spot. Dom was also in third place on actual time, behind Dave Keene, and Carl Saint; Carl’s 22.30 being fastest by nearly two minutes. John Dupen and Adrian Perkin (Godric C.C.) were the fastest of the five teams represented. Alison Purser and Clare Ella improved a minute to take the ‘Mike Dixie’ Memorial Tandem Tricycle Trophy.
